Late October: Future plans, and a few reports

2026-11-01

dosemu2 reports

FreeDOS kernel reports

WINUDF (UDF file system redirector)

First I created a UDF file system like so:

  • sudo apt install udftools
  • dd if=/dev/zero of=udfpart.img bs=1024 count=$((1024 * 128))
  • /sbin/mkfs.udf -m hd --blocksize=2048 --bootarea=mbr udfpart.img
  • dosemu -I "disk { hdimage udfpart.img }"
  • In DOS: winudf /nocd

I created the following new tickets:

  • Ticket #7 IISP header detection is too strict
  • Ticket #8 closing process handles needn't check for open handles
  • Ticket #9 LFN Extended Open/Create calls SFN Extended Open/Create which doesn't exist on MS-DOS v3
  • Ticket #10 Limited amount of SFT extended file seek structures, and the structure doesn't deal well with SFT relocation, better to keep track of internal tables indexed by a field in the SFT.
  • Ticket #11 negative seek offset not allowed in function 7142h, Enhanced DR-DOS and dosemu2 do allow it.
  • Ticket #12 LFN Extended Open/Create problems with MS-DOS v3, unneeded masking of parameters, and incorrect masking of DL so create new file isn't allowed.

Future plans

  • Update dokuwiki server (ETA: partially done)
  • Port lDOS command.com to NASM + WarpLink, add XMS swap, fix running in free memory, add LOADFIX and LOADHIGH commands, add LFN support.
  • Add FAT32 support to lDOS kernel and selected utilities (fastopen/fastseek, sharer, format).
  • Make lDOS format usable.
  • Make Einsicht (Insight frontend for an lDebug debugger) usable.
  • Improve Public Domain ZModem reverse engineering to make it usable.
  • Adapt symscr/process.pl to handle WarpLink extended map files.
  • Adapt ident86/insbound.py to emit symbolic lDebug symbol list files from dynamic labels.
  • Make symbolic lDebug usable with debugger and kernel symbols, requiring to relocate symbols based on base symbols upon running code that relocates memory corresponding to a base symbol.
    • lDebug: Initial relocation of init, relocation of CODE1 and CODE2, with /T switch relocation of the entire debugger process.
    • lDOS: Relocation of init and early DOSDATA, DOSCODE, eventual relocation of DOSCODE, DOSDATA, and IRQSCODE.
    • lDOS TSRs: Relocation of the entire process, relocation of resident to install location.
    • lDOS boot: Relocation of FreeDOS-compatible loader in boot.asm and boot32.asm, or relocation of iniload if it was loaded too high to completely load the kernel payload.
